Teaching Kids to Take Care of Library Books in Elementary School
One of the first lessons students learn in the library is how to take care of library books. Teaching this skill early—especially in 1st and 2nd grade—helps children develop responsibility, respect for shared materials, and a love for reading.
As a school librarian or classroom teacher, you probably know how important it is to set clear expectations for book care. But sometimes it can feel challenging to make this lesson fun and memorable. That’s why I like to use fun library book care activities for elementary students that mix storytelling, discussion, and hands-on practice.
Why Teach Book Care in the Elementary Library?
When students learn how to treat books with care in the library, they gain more than just good habits. They learn responsibility, empathy, and how their actions affect others. A well-loved book in good condition can spark joy for dozens of readers, but a book that’s torn or water-damaged might be lost forever.
By teaching library rules lessons for 1st grade and 2nd grade, we’re giving students the tools they need to take care of school property—and more importantly, to value books as treasures.
Activities to Teach Respect for Books
One of my favorite ways to introduce this concept is with the book The Library Dragon by Carmen Agra Deedy. This engaging read-aloud is the perfect springboard for a conversation about what happens when books aren’t cared for—and how we can all do our part to protect them.

Final Thoughts
Teaching primary students responsibility for library books sets the tone for the entire school year. When kids know how to care for books, they’re able to enjoy them longer—and so can their classmates. Whether you’re a librarian, classroom teacher, or homeschool parent, this lesson is an essential part of building a positive reading culture.
Once your students are confident and ready to care for books, it’s the perfect time to introduce them to the excitement of exploring new titles. Hosting a book tasting activity in the elementary library is a fun way to celebrate their responsibility and build even more enthusiasm for reading.
