This summer I decided to open up my Library Media Center one day a week for two hours to students and their families. The students and their families could come in one day a week for a story hour, craft, and to check out books. It was so much fun and a great way to open up the Library Media Center to our school families! I loved getting to know the families this summer and of course seeing all the kiddos!
Host Story Hour in Your School Library This Summer
Each week I read a summer-themed book to the kids. I chose books that also have a soundscape in the Novel Effect app ( if you have not tried the Novel Effect app you need to check out the free version). I also provided a craft to go along with the book. Click here for a copy of my book and craft schedule for the summer. Each week I promoted story hour and open checkout time on Facebook. Here is a copy of the slides I used each week. I took a screenshot of the slide and uploaded it as a photo on Facebook. I had a great turnout each week and I loved it!
Summer Book Bingo
To kick off summer reading in the Library Media Center we did a summer book bingo. This was a very simple way to get the students excited about reading. I created a summer reading bingo card and sent a letter out to parents explaining how it works. If the student gets 5 in a row they get a special prize when they turn in their bingo card in the fall. I had great participation and was more than happy to give out many little plush animal keychains. To get a copy of the letter and Bingo card click here. I will be doing book bingo and opening the Library Media Center again this summer. I am already working on the books and crafts I want to do!
